The University of Iowa

The Iowa City community will get a rare glimpse into the tightly controlled North Korean regime through American journalist Suki Kim.

Kim, author of Without You, There Is No Us: My Time with the Sons of North Korea’s Elite, will be in Iowa City on Oct. 9 in partnership with the Iowa City Book Festival and the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights’ One Community, One Book project. The Iowa City Book Festival is a celebration of books, reading, and writing and takes places Oct. 4-9 in and around downtown Iowa City.

The One Community, One Book reading program encourages the Iowa City community to read and discuss the same book with a human rights or social justice theme. Kim’s book is a first-hand look into the lives of North Korea's elite during her time teaching English to young men at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology in the nations capitol.

Kim is a New York Time's Bestseller, has been featured on a TED talk discussing her time in North Korea and is an outspoken opponent of the North Korean regime.

The University of Iowa’s spring 2017 Theme Semester, Our Lives Online, is one of many sponsors for the event. All members of the Iowa City community are encouraged to read the book and attend the author lecture on Sunday, Oct. 9 at C20 Pomerantz Center, 213 North Clinton Street. View event details.
